Trade Paperback. Condition: Good. 1908 Edition. 18 Pages. Stiff boards covered with gray paper titled A Last Will by Williston Fish. Printed with red and black ink. This book is the original 1908 Copyright by Alfred Bartlett and The Merrymount Press of Boston. Attorney businessman, and part-time author, Williston Fish created the sentimental Last Will of Charles Lounsbury in 1897. The imaginary Lounsbury was variously identified as a wealthy client of Fish, an anonymous millionaire, a Chicago attorney housed in the Cook County Asylum, a hobo, and a destitute millionaire in a Chicago jail cell. In most versions, the will was found in the pocket of a tattered overcoat after the death of the owner. This work, also known as A Last Will, The Hobo's Will or The Happy Testament, first appeared in Harper's Weekly in 1898. It was reprinted so many times, often in a garbled or improved form, that a correct edition was published in 1908. This fictional prose-poetry testament was often printed in the guise of an actual legal instrument, frequently without attribution, or at least accurate attribution. For generations of attorneys, it became a classic that circulated widely around the holidays as a gift-book or holiday greeting. The story begins --- It was a day when summer was first new. The pale leaves upon the trees were starting forth upon the yet unbending branches. The grass in the parks had a freshness in its green like the freshness of the blue in the sky and of the yellow of the sun, a freshness to make one wish that life might renew its youth. The clear breezes from the south wantoned about, and then were still, as if loath to go finally away. Half idly, half thoughtfully, the rich man wrote upon the white paper before him, beginning what he wrote with capital letters, such as he had not made since, as a boy in school, he had taken pride in his skill with the pen: In the name of God, Amen. I, Charles Lounsbury, being of sound and disposing mind and memory do now make and publish this my last will and testament, in order, as justly as I may, to distribute my interests in the world among succeeding men.and so it continues.
