The decrees forbade the import of British goods into European countries allied with or dependent upon France, and installed the Continental System in Europe. The French decrees were enacted to inhibit Britain's ability to trade with other countries. In retaliation, the British seized American ships bound for France. This deprived the United States of two major trading partners. After the the War of 1812 between the United States and Britain started, France rescind its ban on American ships.
