''Dans L?intuition philosophique, on voit comment toute philosophie est déploiement d?une intuition. Non pas construction d?un système, donc, mais pas non plus contemplation immobile ou donnée, chaque philosophie est animée par cet acte ou cette impulsion simple, qui s?atteste par des refus critiques et des effets de vérité, qui oriente sa création et son interprétation, dans son histoire comme dans notre vie.'' Add to basketWood Engravings by P.E. Vibert (illustrator). First printing thus. Small octavo. 93pp. 6.25" x 4.25" Limited to 1500 total copies, of which this is 721 (1/250 copies printed on the more elegant Rives paper). Originally delivered as a lecture at the Philosophical Congress of Bologne on April 10, 1911, L'Intuition Philosophique encapsulates Bergson's influential ideas on metaphysics and epistemology, underscoring his impact on 20th-century philosophy. Bergson's advocacy for intuition as a means of direct knowledge challenges traditional reliance on empirical science and analytical thought, inspiring future existentialist and phenomenological thinkers. This book remains essential for understanding Bergson's contributions to philosophy, offering a profound argument for the value of intuition in exploring the essence of existence and consciousness. Bergson's insightful lecture was finally published in 1927, the same year in which Bergson was honored with the Nobel Prize in Literature. Bookplate of Swiss chemist and pharmacist Albert Wander (d. 1932), spine faintly sunned, overall fine. Several leaves left unopened. Rebound in full brick red crushed morocco, arts and craft style stamping and gilt border decorations, marbled endpapers. Original wraps bound in front and rear.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE COPY. Limited issue, this copy number 521 of 1220 on teinte navarre of a total edition of 1500. A lecture delivered before the Congres Philosophique de Bologne on the 10th of April 1911. Bergson was one of the most famous and influential French philosophers of the late 19th century-early 20th century. "Although his international fame reached cult-like heights during his lifetime, his influence decreased notably after the second World War. While such French thinkers as Merleau-Ponty, Sartre, and Lévinas explicitly acknowledged his influence on their thought, it is generally agreed that it was Gilles Deleuze's 1966 Bergsonism that marked the reawakening of interest in Bergson's work. Deleuze realized that Bergson's most enduring contribution to philosophical thinking is his concept of multiplicity. Bergson's concept of multiplicity attempts to unify in a consistent way two contradictory features: heterogeneity and continuity. Many philosophers today think that this concept of multiplicity, despite its difficulty, is revolutionary" (Valentine Moulard Leonard, Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy online).
