From the Royal Society of Arts Library with the words ' Withdrawn from RSA Library' to sticker to inside cover. This book, based in part on correspondence, both private and State, and on Rumford's own publications and diaries, gives a scholarly account of his personality and achievements and stresses his lasting contribution to scientific and techonological advance. it races Rumford's career as soldier, man-of-affaits, scientist, technologist, philanthropist and educationalist against a background of the history and ideas of eighteenth-century England, France and Bavaria. His arrogant assertions often drew ridicule from his contemporaries, but he was one of the first to realise the importance of applied science. His inventions - whether domestic fire-places, stoves, lamps, cannons, carriage wheels or thermometers - were invariably practical. Rumford was a pioneer in the integration of science and society whose proper recognition is long overdue. Illustrated. 302 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
