Salinger's story "The Hang of It" which was his first appearance in a book and came 8 years before "Catcher in the Rye." A tight very good copy in illustrated paper covered boards with some minor wear to the edges, a tiny chip to the top corner of the second page and some of the usual toning to the pages. A nicer than usual copy of a book that is very prone to wear.

The box is addressed to a soldier in Camp Lee, Virginia and has a few bumps and some light rubbing, but is in nice condition. The 1942 first edition is extremely uncommon, and particularly so in the original case.

The Kit Book is a compilation of stories, poems, and cartoons produced for soldiers during the Second World War, first published in 1942. It includes "The Hang of It", an early work by J. D. Salinger. It was first published in Collier's magazine shortly before the United States entered the Second World War. Salinger was subsequently drafted, and the work's reappearance in the Kit Book caught the attention of his superior officers, who assigned him to the Air Force Service Command's Public Relations Department.
