The book tells the story of the Third American Karakorum Expedition, which took place in 1953 on the second highest peak of the Himalayas. Standing just below the exalted heights of Mt. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. THE BOOK IS MADE TO ORDER AND IT TAKES 2 TO 4 WEEKS FOR IT TO BE READY FOR SHIPPING *****SIZE - 8 x 5.5 inches (21 x 13.5 cm). *****EDITION - 11 of 100, initialed and numbered. *****If you are interested in a different title, send me a message and I will give you a quote.*****Book's original ISBN 978-1493050246*****Books, as much as experiences, change my life, and I decided to make a limited collection of all the books I read and loved. And maybe you also will find in my collection a book that you enjoyed, and it even might have influenced your life.*****The book is a soft cover which I recycle and transform into a limited edition, personalized hardback with leather cover, designed and made by me. First, I prepare the book by embedding cotton cords into the spine. Adding 2 mm wood boards to the front and back. And reinforcing everything with cloth. To make the cover I use grade A, naturally tanned hide, I buy from a tannery in north Spain. It is the same leather Louis Vuitton uses to make his bags, so it is top quality. I do all the processing of the leather myself. First, I design the cover, and what I did here I used a dramatic painting of the K2 mountain. Next, I mix leather inks and screen them on the surface of the leather. The inks are partly absorbed by the skin to create a permanent bond. Finally, I coat the leather with protective solution. The leather gives the image a vintage look and beautiful texture, and it will age nicely with time. Inside the front cover. I can print a personal message or a quote from the book. The book is beautiful. Visually it has a very nice texture, it smells great, and the more you handle it the more beautiful it will become. And it makes a great gift for yourself, or somebody who appreciates books. So if you want one, don't snooze, or you might lose.*****RETURNS: This is a custom-made item, so returns or exchanges are not accepted. But you can contact me if there is any problem with your order. *****COLORS: Since I make each item to order, the color might vary from the pictures. It depends on how the inks mix and how they react with leather. *****SHIPPING: I make each item to order, and it takes a few weeks, since I need to find the book first. I go to the post office once a week. Estimated delivery time is about two weeks, but it depends on the postal service and customs. And occasionally there are delays, and it might take a month or so to arrive.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First Edition. 334 pp, with color illustrations form photographs. Bookplate of pioneering climber and author J. Monroe Thorington on front pastedown and inscribed on the front free endpaper "For Roy Thorington. Your support made this expedition possible. May this book bring you some of the excitement and the memories it did for all of us. C. Houston Dec. 1954." Addtionally, tipped in to the rear endpapers and flyleaf are an invitation to the screening of a film on the Italian ascent of K2 at the Explorer's Club, a New York Times article about that ascent, and a New York Times review of this book. There is offsetting from one of these clippings to the final page of text, otherwise text is clean. Mild rubbing to corners and base of spine; binding sound. In the original, priced dust jacket, which is somewhat sun-faded and has some creasing and rubbing to the lower edge. The compelling account of the Third American Karakoram Expedition, during which the party--led by Houston--was trapped by a blizzard for nine days above 25,000 feet. Neate H118: "Despite failure to reach the summit, this expedition is considered to be one of the pinnacles of American Himalayan mountaineering--a dramatic story which almost resulted in the destruction of the whole party during the descent.".
