Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Quarter vellum and cloth covered boards, issued without dust jacket. Binding very slightly cocked with the vellum soiled and front cover modestly so, corners just worn through, small four-line printed bookseller description with annotations laid down onto rear fly, a very good copy. The text is fine. A novelization of Sherriff's play, one of 600 numbered copies Signed by both authors. Sherriff had been a young officer during WWI and upon his return to civilian life as an insurance clerk became interested in amateur theater. *Journey's End*, based on Sherriff's letters to his family during the war, was written as an amateur effort but at the suggestion of a friend he sent it to George Bernard Shaw, who helped get it produced. The play, a powerful and poignant antiwar story set in the trenches of WWI, became a smash stage hit under the direction of James Whale, who had himself been a POW. With the advent of talkies, stage hits and stage professionals were suddenly in demand, and Whale was imported to Hollywood to direct the film version. He followed his debut with several other stylish moviesâ"notably his classic horror filmsâ"before retiring from films in 1941. The plot was reworked with an all-star cast in 1976 as *Aces High*. Sherriff also wrote or co-wrote screenplays for several other important films including *The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man* (both directed by Whale), *The Four Feathers* and *Odd Man Out*.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The true First UK printing published by Gollancz in 1929. The Book is complete and is in Very Good+ condition. The wraps binding remains tight. The covers are mildly soiled and toned. The spine is intact with two small closed tears to the upper spine folds. The end papers and prelims are spotted with somemild spotting to the page edges in places throughout. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Sherriff's good fortune with the phenomenal success of what is essentially a mediocre play depended in large part on the appearance in the intital production of the work - by the Incorporated Stage Society in a two-day run at the Apollo Theatre in December 1928 - of the 21-year old Lawrence Olivier (directed by the equally unknown James Whale). The production transferred to The Savoy Theatre for a three-week run in January 1929 and thence to The Prince of Wales where it ran for two years, during which time it was also produced by 14 other companies in the Anglophone world and in 17 other languages across the world. Hollywood beckoned . . . The luck also rubbed off on Victor Gollancz, for whom the text was a first major publishing coup, selling 175,000 copies. Self-wraps mention a cloth issue of which it appears there was no such. A very scarce title to find with such attributes. The Trade hardback edition was not to be published until the following year. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
