2 vols, cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, 6, xiii, 240 + 241-497 pp, maps. From the introduction to volumes two and three: "This, Darwin's first book, originally appeared, with the subtitle Journal and Remarks. 1832-1836. as the third volume of Narrative of the Surveying Voyages. the whole edited by FitzRoy (Freeman 10). It appeared again later in the same year as an independent book under the above title. Many years later, he wrote in his autobiography 'The success of this my first literary child always tickles my vanity more than any of my other books'In 1845. John Murray asked Darwin if he would rewrite it, in a shorter and more popular style, for inclusion in his Colonial and Home Library. This he did and the book was greatly altered and issued without the map* (Freeman 14): the present edition reprints Darwin's original text published in 1839." Near Very Good.
