Unclipped jacket is virtually pristine and in acetate protective sleeve as acquired (this has 6 cm tear from bottom outer corner). Churchill's one page endorsement adds interest for obsessional Churchill completists. 19 cm x 25.5 cm.

The only published transcript of Philipot's Roll, the original of which lies in the East Sussex Record Office. Since Philipot's document is at variance with corresponding lists (e.g. Statham, Darell, Lyon and Hasted), its publication for a wider audience was a signficant step both for scholars of the history of the Cinque Ports and for those with an interest in the county generally. Hardcover in Dust Jacket. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First Thus. The only published transcript of "Philipot's Roll," the original of which lies in the East Sussex Record Office. As Somerset Herald, Philipot in 1627 presented to his patron, George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, a list of the 75 Constables and Lord Wardens, with brief biographical details and their arms richly emblazoned. This is a very good copy in every respect of a handsome facsimile reproduction, virtually mint, save for some toning to the endpapers. Churchill's brief Foreword appears as a reproduced letter on the Prime Minister's Downing Street letterhead. 4to (31 pages, illustrated with 2 leaves of plates and 8 leaves of the emblazoned Roll] (Cohen B154 ) (Woods B54 ).

Condition: Good. Minor shelfwear to dustjacket and its extremities, price clipped, minor shelfwear to extremities of bookcovers, previous owners bookplate on inside front cover, light foxing to front endpaper, otherwise fine.
