Lovely copy in wholly unrestored contemporary binding of the third and final volume of Leech's well-known trilogy of illustrations from the 'Punch' archives. Scarce in anything like this condition.

Cloth. Condition: Fair. John Leech (illustrator). Two volumes of John Leech's contributions to Punch. Volumes II and III only of this eventual five volume set. Really reading copies to perhaps be broken for the plates or to mend a better copy. Priced accordingly. Volume II is dated 1887, volume III is undated. Bound by Leighton, son and Hodge with binder's stamps to the rear pastedowns. These volumes comprise of numerous illustrations by Victorian caricaturist John Leech. Punch or The London Charivari was a British satirical and humour work. It was first established in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and Ebenezer Landells. John Leech is best known for his contributions to Punch. In full pictorial cloth bindings. Externally, rubbed with damp staining to boards. Damp staining is heavier to the front board. Loss to the head and tail of spine to both volumes due to rubbing. Split to the cloth of front joint to volume II. Front hinge and joint to volume II is tender. Rear joint to volume II is tender. Front hinge to volume III has failed with the backstrip lifting from textblock. Front joint to volume III is starting but firm. Rear hinge to volume III has failed. Front endpaper and first three pages to volume III are detached but present. Internally, firmly bound. Chipping to the edges of the first few pages. Pages are slightly age toned with spotting to the first and last few pages. Otherwise, the occasional spots. Fair. book.
