First edition of Claxtonâs seminal photobook on jazz. Quarto, original black cloth, pictorial front endpapers. Profusely illustrated in color and black and white. Presentation copy, inscribed by the photographer on the half-title page, "For _______, William Claxton." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Newsweek has called Jazzlife ". surely the most thorough and imaginative visual record of American jazz at mid-century that we'll ever see." Claxton's work is a photographic depiction of jazz artists in the 1960's, most noted for its images of Chet Baker. He has photographed for Steve McQueen and other celebrities and models, and in 1967, he created the film Basic Black. It is credited as the first "fashion video" and is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Erste Ausgabe.

First edition, from the library of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, presented to him as a Christmas gift by Mick Jagger, with a gift tag inscribed (not in Jagger's hand), "Charlie, Happy Christmas, from Mick", and with Watts's posthumous bookplate. The true first edition, with the two 45 RPM discs still present in the retaining band inside the lower board. This copy signed by Claxton on the title page. A record in words, pictures - and in the true first - sounds of a coast-to-coast tour undertaken by the influential German broadcaster Berendt and leading jazz photographer Claxton. Berendt's radio show "Jazztime Baden-Baden" pioneered the popularisation of jazz in post-war Germany. Behrendt's words accompany Claxton's superb selection of images, described by Newsweek as "the most thorough and imaginative visual record of American jazz at mid-century that we'll ever see". First published in German, only reissued in English in a revised edition in 2005. A superb copy, it is difficult to imagine a better. Quarto. Original black cloth, title gilt to upper board and spine. With dust jacket. Numerous illustrations, a few in colour, coloured stylised "map" endpapers, vinyl discs in end-pocket. Text-block toned as usual, the jacket just a little whitened at the edges, and with a chip from the edge of the front turn-in, no loss of text, but otherwise very good indeed.
