Wikipedia: Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg. Based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley, it stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, who, with the help of a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw), hunts a man-eating great white shark that attacks beachgoers at a New England summer resort town. Murray Hamilton plays the mayor, and Lorraine Gary portrays Brody's wife. The screenplay is credited to Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actor-writer Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the script during principal photography. Regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history, Jaws was the prototypical summer blockbuster and won several awards for its music and editing. It was the highest-grossing film in history until the release of Star Wars two years later; both films were pivotal in establishing the modern Hollywood business model, which pursues high box-office returns from action and adventure films with simple high-concept premises, released during the summer in thousands of theaters and advertised heavily. Jaws was followed by three sequels, none of which involved Spielberg or Benchley, as well as many imitative thrillers. ** Adjusted for inflation, "Jaws" (1975) grossed over $1.5 billion in its initial domestic run, making it one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Initially, it earned $260 million at the domestic box office. When accounting for ticket price inflation, this figure translates to over $1.5 billion. >> Cover creasing & scuffing. slight spine slant; pen to front end page. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" Tall. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Offered is a true first edition, first printing of Jaws by Peter Benchley, published by Doubleday & Company, Garden City, New York, in 1974. Complete with its original unclipped $6.95 dust jacket, this is the landmark novel that inspired Steven Spiel…berg's classic film and remains one of the most sought-after modern first editions. The copyright page identifies the book as a First Edition, with 1974 copyright and original publication information. The book is bound in the original black cloth with blue endpapers and retains the original dust jacket priced at $6.95. Condition Book: Very Good. Binding remains tight and square. Black cloth boards are clean with light shelf wear. Pages are clean with mild age toning. Top edge shows some light soiling. Small bump/wear at the spine ends. This is an ex-lending library copy from Womrath, evidenced by a library ownership stamp on the front endpaper. Importantly, there are no library pockets, no card sleeves, and no call number markings on the spine, making this a much cleaner ex-library example than typically encountered. Dust Jacket: Very Good. Original unclipped $6.95 jacket. Light edge wear with a few small chips and creases, primarily at the corners and spine ends. Some rubbing and age toning, but the front panel remains bright and highly presentable. Housed in a removable archival Mylar protective cover. A solid collectible copy of Peter Benchley's influential debut novel and an increasingly difficult first printing to find with its original jacket.
