Dieses umfassende Handbuch zu Tomcat 5 beschreibt Administration, Einsatz und Optimierung von Tomcat 5 von der Installation bis zum Einsatz von JSP-/Servlet-Anwendungen auf Unternehmensebene.Der Autor beleuchtet außerdem die Integration von Tomcat 5 mit anderen Komponenten einer Webumgebung - Datenbanken, LDAP-Servern, den Framewoirks Struts und Cocoon sowie natürlich mit Webservern. Den Titel des Buches könnte man als eine Untertreibung bezeichnen. Lajos Mozcar gibt Einblick in viele OpenSource-Themen die im Zusammenhang mit einer Enterprise-Umgebung Einsatz finden. Der Inhalt ist gut strukturiert. Step by Step wird anhand einiger Beipiele das Wissen für die Entwicklung und Administration unter Tomcat 5 vermittelt. Interessant ist dieses Buch jedoch sicherlich nicht nur für Profis welche mit Tomcat arbeiten. Da es u.a. gute Ratschläge für das Vorgehen beim Aufbau einer Entwicklungs-, Test- und Produktivumgbung gibt und da auf Themen w.z.B. Security (Authentifizierung und Autorisierung) eingegangen wird können diese Kenntnisse teilweise auf andere Middlewareprodukte adaptiert werden. Für das eín oder andere Thema kann es jedoch hilfreich sein sich weitere Lektüren ergänzend anzuschaffen (z.B. zum Thema LDAP) um am Ende des Buches alle Beispiel-Applikationen erfolgreich zum Laufen gebracht zu haben. Lajos Moczar hat dieses Buch mit sehr viel Leidenschaft geschrieben. Generell finde ich die Reihe der "Open-Source Library" genial. Der interessierte Leser benötigt eit, wenn er sich noch nie mit dem Java-Webserver Tomcat auseinandergesetzt hat. Und doch gibt das Buch eine ausgezeichnete Einführung in das "Startup" mit Tomcat - sowohl auf Linux als auch Windows. Diesbezüglich werden detailliert folgende Themen ausgearbeitet: 1) Konfiguration Tomcat 2) Ant bzw. allgemeine Einführung in den "Aufbau einer Entwicklungsumgebung" 3) Servlets 4) JSP 5) Sicherheit Das Kapitel zu JSP in etwas unglücklich, passt aber in den Kontext. Es ist aber eben auch kein JSP Buch, beschreibt aber in einer guten Einführung die Zusammenarbeit von JSP/JavaBeans/Servlets.
