Paperback. Condition: New. 1st. 'An eerily prescient foreshadowing of current affairs' Guardian'Not only Lewis's most important book but one of the most important books ever produced in the United States' New YorkerA vain, outlandish, anti-immigrant, fearmongering demagogue runs for President of the United States - and wins. Sinclair Lewis's chilling 1935 bestseller is the story of Buzz Windrip, 'Professional Common Man', who promises poor, angry voters that he will make America proud and prosperous once more, but takes the country down a far darker path. As the new regime slides into authoritarianism, newspaper editor Doremus Jessup can't believe it will last - but is he right? This cautionary tale of liberal complacency in the face of populist tyranny shows it really can happen here.

Add to basketHard Cover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. First edition. Large chip from jacket spine base with associated fading to spine, loss from other jacket corners, jacket edges rubbed with several closed tears, boards lightly soiled, owner bookplate on front endpaper. 1935 Hard Cover. 458 pp. 8vo. Original black cloth, gilt titles. A satirical work of dystopian fiction envisioning an American dictatorship. The causes for the descent into fascism are authentic, making the novel an insightful glimpse of what it looks like to trade one set of evils for another. Lewis wrote the book during the Great Depression, basing the dictatorship on Hitler's, but replacing hateful indoctrination with misleading appeals to American values. Many believe the novel to be a direct reaction to the possible candidacy of Huey Long for president in 1936. It was published five years after Lewis became the first American writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Lewis also won (and declined) the Pulitzer Prize for his 1925 novel Arrowsmith.

Deckled edges. Previous owner's stamp reading, "United Liberal Church" in black ink on front paste down as well as title page. Front hinge cracked. Pages foxed. Previous bookseller's sticker pasted onto back paste down. Spine slightly rolled. No dust jacket. A first edition copy of Lewis' book of dystopian political fiction that is eerily reminiscent of the chaos and corruption facing many wealthy nations today. Lewis' "It Can't Happen Here" was written just two years after Hitler's rise to power in Germany and describes the United States' descent into fascism controlled by Senator Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip. It's title comes from a line from a wealthy capitalist in response to a journalist raising concerns that the country's new leader has transformed into a demagogue.

Add to basketCondition: VERY GOOD. First edition. Lewis's chilling and satirical novel, set in what was - at the time it was written - the very near future - that is just one or two years immediately following its publication. A story of the rise of a populist demagogue as the dictator of the United States, and the often ineffectual resistance of a small-town Vermont newspaper publisher. While Lewis might have had Louisiana politician Huey Long (who was preparing to run for the presidency) as his model, I found it impossible to read the first third without thinking of Donald Trump, especially when Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip promises to restore patriotism and "traditional" values. A must read novel for today's times as each day leaves us with only the hope that "it can't happen here." 458 pp. Very good in black cloth with gold lettering on the spine -rubbing to the spine lettering, but it is still legible, very light toning to the pages, some discoloration on the endpapers from the glue of the original binding, but overall a sturdy and attractive copy of an important book.

A story of the rise of a populist demagogue as the dictator of the United States, and the often ineffectual resistance of a small-town Vermont newspaper publisher. A must read novel for today's times although our hopes that "it can't happen here" have been diminished. Published just 5 years after Lewis became the first American writer to win the Nobel award. 458 pp. Very near fine in black cloth with gold lettering on the spine (previous owner's name on front endpaper and the usual discoloration on the endpapers from the glue of the original binding) in a rather poor mostly silver dust jacket with a large (approx 2 square inches) chip on the lower edge of the front cover, a closed tear with tape repair to interior and many small chips to the upper edge, loss of about 1/4 in on the ends of the spine. Despite its flaws, however the dj does have the original price of $2.50 and it did do its job of protecting the book.

The Publisher's note state that '.it was originally intended to be titled, 'It Can't Happen in America'. In 1930, Sinclair Lewis became the first author from the United States (and the first from the Americas) to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, which was awarded 'for his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humour, new types of characters.' Lewis wrote six popular novels: 'Main Street' (1920), 'Babbitt' (1922), 'Arrowsmith' (1925), 'Elmer Gantry' (1927), 'Dodsworth' (1929), and 'It Can't Happen Here' (1935).
