In a half calf binding, signed by Harrods Ltd, with marbled paste downs and end papers. Ink inscription to the first blank page, dated 1958. Edith Somerville (1858-1949) and her cousin Violet Martin (1862-1915), collaborated to write sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic tales of Irish life, under the name of Somerville & Ross. Among their best-loved stories are those narrating incidents in the life of Major Sinclair Yeates, Resident Magistrate at Skebawn. Published between 1899 and 1915, these Irish R.M. stories are filled with humour and astute character sketches. In a half calf binding. Externally smart, with some fading to the spine, a little staining to the boards, and minimal bumping to the extremities. Gilt is still bright and good colour to the boards. Internally, binding is strained, with seven pages detached but loosely inserted, and one page coming loose. However, all pages are accounted for, intact, bright and clean. Very Good. book.
