Soon after American troops arrived in Western Samoa in 1942 a phamplet on "elementary Samoan custom" was prepared for their information. Following WWII it was found that these notes proved valuable for visitors and thus provided the incentive for this more detailed and wide-ranging book. It was decided to publish the book locally, although this presented difficultiesas the author's preface explains: "Much of the type employed has had long service and is in short supply; moreover, it has all had to be hand set. . when a few pages were set up; the type was then broken up and re-set for further stages. Shortage of paper has made it essential to employ small type and to set the lines close together." As well as a synopsis of Samoan history, the book covers many aspects of Samoan life, including its society, village ceremonials, food and meals, religion, dances and entertainment. First edition of 1948 from Samoan Printing and Publishing, 189 pages including bibliography, glossary, index, with corrigenda printed on page following contents page, e/paper maps. VG+ grey flecked pages have black decorations and titles to front and spine, small mark at lower front, apparently from printing process, light browning to FEPs, internally otherwise excellent, no inscriptions. Scarce in first edition.
