Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand / very good condition for age - PURPOSE OF THIS WORK -- The purpose of this work is to explain briefly, yet as completely as possible, the development of one essential phase of human civilization which has not yet received sufficient attentionthe development of science, that is of systematized positive knowledge. I am not prepared to say that this development is more important than any other aspect of intellectual progress, for example, than the development of religion, of art, or of social justice. But it is equally important; and no history of civilization can be tolerably complete which does not give considerable space to the explanation of scientific progress. If we had any doubts about this, it would suffice to ask ourselves what constitutes the essential difference between our and earlier civilizations. Throughout the course of history, in every period, and in almost every country, we find a small number of saints, of great artists, of men of science. The saints of to-day are not necessarily more saintly than those of a thousand years ago; our artists are not necessarily greater than those of early Greece. -- CONTENTS -- The Dawn of Greek and Hebrew Knowledge -- The Dawn of Iranian Knowledge -- The Time of Thales and Pythagoras -- The Time of the Two Hippocrates -- The Time of Plato -- The Time of Aristotle -- The Time of Euclid -- The Time of Archimedes -- The Time of Cato the Censor -- The Time of Hipparchos -- The Time of Lucretius -- The Time of Virgil -- The Time of Celsus -- The Time of Pliny -- The Time of Ptolemy -- The Time of Galen -- The Time of Alexander of Aphrodisias -- The Time of Diophantos -- The Time of lamblichos -- The Time of Oribasios -- The Time of Fa-hsien -- The Time of Proclos -- The Time of Philoponos -- The Time of Alexander of Tralles -- The Time of Hsüan Tsang -- The Time of I-ching -- The Time of Bede -- The Time of Jäbir ibn Haiyan -- The Time of al-Khwärizmi -- The Time of al-Räzi -- The Time of al-Mas'üdi -- The Time of Abü-1-Wafä' -- The Time of ai-Birüni -- The Time of Omar Khayyam. Condition: Good. Most items will be dispatched the same or the next working day. A copy that has been read but remains in clean condition. All of the pages are intact and the cover is intact and the spine may show signs of wear. The book may have minor markings which are not specifically mentioned. A good condition pair of books that make up a complete volume III from a larger set. These are ex-reference library rebinds with the usual amount of stamps. Some rubbing to the book edges and a few dusty scuffs. The binding is slackening so the boards have some wiggle to them, part 1 in particular, but nothing is split or loose and the textblock bindings are very decent. The textblock edges are marked. The contents show a mild amount of tanning and some light handling in minor bent corners or dusty prints, but are in stellar condition overall with the bulk of the contents remaining clear, tidy and unmarked with good fresh pages. A very nice pair of books, particularly the inner contents.
