Scritto durante le degenze in ospedali militari e ultimato a Parigi in un ufficio dello stato maggiore, fu pubblicato a spese dell'autore, nell'agosto del 1917, dalle Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française. Tiratura: centocinquanta copie. «La guerra m'impose di gridare, di cantare.» Questa interrogazione della guerra, questa «esplosione lirica» cosí lontana dalla miserevole epica dei cocardiers d'allora, rende visionarie le vicissitudini belliche d'un intellettuale tra chefs e poilus, «manovali della guerra» separati dalla popolazione civile e umiliati dalle ingloriose trincee; soldati apatridi, infine, che al modo di Nietzsche hanno il desiderio «d'abbracciare il nemico». La «sacra allucinazione» della guerra, la sua caotica sproporzione, si rivela una sordida impresa capitalistica. In questo libro il cui stile aspro ed euforico fa pensare ad Also sprach Zarathustra e alle Cinq grandes odes di Claudel , piú che una mistica della guerra, una paradossale avventura poetica. Non si tratta d'«esorcizzare le cose con la parola», come suggerí Gottfried Benn, bensí di trovare nelle parole una seconda catastrofe. A smentire i semplificatori dell'animo umano, che di Drieu han fatto scempio, asserzioni come queste: «Addio, verità assoluta: tu non mi basti», «La vita è una parola solitaria».
