A very good set bound in matching contemporary dark blue half calf, blind tooled and gilt ruled spines, gilt lettering. Marbled boards. Some foxing, most noticeable on the end-papers and paste-downs. 8vo. Charles Knight. 1830-1831. ~ James Rennie (1787- 1867, Adelaide) was a Scottish naturalist. From 1830 to 1834 he was professor of natural history and zoology at King's College, when his Chair was abolished due to a dearth of students. From then on he made his living as a natural history author, and emigrated to Australia in1840, where he ran the College High School in Elizabeth Street, Sydney, with an emphasis on the arts and natural history. He co-authored Insect Transformations with John Obadiah Westwood, Fellow of the Linnean Society and president of the Entomological Society of London (1852-1853).

Published by Charles Knight between 1829 and 1838, these works were intended as complementary volumes to the Society's Library of Useful Knowledge.Two pages of adverts to the rear of Volume III. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Spines are a little faded. A few light marks to the cloth. Small tear to the rear joint of Volume I. Hinges of Volume I are starting, as is the rear hinge of Volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean. Very Good Indeed. book.
