Hardcover. Condition: Very Good condition. No jacket. First U.S. Edition. New York: Boni & Liveright, 1924. Very Good condition but for a little rubbing to the covers. This is the 1924 Boni & Liveright first edition -- not a cheaply-made modern reprint. Hinges are sound. No owner's name or bookplate. Not a library discard. Pages are clean and crisp. No foxing. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. 43 illustrations, some foldouts and in color. Translated by A. Paul Maerker-Branden. In the 1920's the author, an Austrian scientist, was considered one of the foremost biologists in the world. THE NEW YORK TIMES called him the next Darwin. Many of Kammerer's experiments dealt with breeding various amphibians in environments different from their usual habitat. The experiments put him in the middle of a worldwide controversy with prominent scientists on both sides of the issue. In 1926 an article in NATURE by Dr. G. K. Noble, Curator of Reptiles of the AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, disputed Kammerer's findings. Kammerer committed suicide six weeks later. The suicide lead many researchers to believe that Kammerer may have perpetrated a hoax. Was Kammerer a fraud or did someone sabotage his work? For more see Arthur Koestler's "The Case of the Midwife Toad." Bound in the original burgundy cloth. Gilt lettering on the spine is still bright and shiny. First U.S. Edition. Hardcover. Very Good condition/No jacket. 8vo. 414pp.
