Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Most adults walk through the world with an imagination that has never been bridled. It runs ahead of them into worry. It runs behind them into regret. It pulls them, hour by hour, into futures and pasts they did not choose to inhabit. The result is a life lived mostly in the wake of an unsu…pervised mind - capable of extraordinary creation, but rarely turned that way. THE GOLDEN BRIDLE is the fourth volume of The Orphic Cycle, Frank Onaissi's five-book reading of Greek myth as a map of the inner life. Here, the myth is Bellerophon - the hero who could not tame the winged horse Pegasus until the goddess Athena placed in his hand a bridle made of gold. With it, he soared. Without it, he fell. The story is, on a careful reading, the most precise myth we have for what it actually takes to direct the imagination - and for the particular failure mode of the practitioner who succeeds too well, and forgets what made the success possible. Across ten chapters of narrative, six rigorously practical exercises in the Practitioner's Forge, and a wide sweep of bonus material covering resistance, other people, money, the body, solitude, time, loss, beginnings, endings, and the long quiet years of mature practice, this volume offers a complete working manual for the practitioner who has read enough and is now ready to do the actual work. This volume includes: - A full narrative reading of the Bellerophon myth across four arcs: the winged horse, slaying the chimera, the gadfly and the fall, and the true vision after the descent. - Six field-tested practices: the Bridle Sit, Naming the Chimera, the Aerial Pivot, Melting the Lead, the Blind Walk, and the 21-Day Bridle Diet. - Sixteen bonus chapters addressing the obstacles practitioners actually encounter - not the ones manuals usually pretend they encounter. - Four illustrative case studies, drawn from years of correspondence with readers, that show how the principles operate under real pressure. - Foreword, glossary, recommended reading, and a preview of the closing volume. Each volume of The Orphic Cycle stands alone. If you have read the earlier volumes - The Lyre and the Underworld, The Fire Within, and Psyche & Eros - this is the next companion on the road. If this is your first encounter with the cycle, it is also a complete book in itself; nothing essential is lost. Written in a warm, direct, second-person voice. Designed to be read more than once.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Talking Pictures is the third, central component of a five-part cycle titled Imagination Becomes Reality, produced by the renowned Goetz Collection. Here the focus shifts to contemporary narrative images, less actual "talking pictures", films or videos, than other visual media--paintings, for instance-…-engaged in an exchange with the viewer. When painting used comprehensible set symbols, compositions, atmospheres or motifs, the work was readable not only individually but also intersubjectively. Nowadays, the question arises as to what visual elements are readable at all. Talking Pictures endeavors to illustrate through the works of Nigel Cooke, Peter Doig, Inka Essenhigh, William Kentridge, Jochen Kuhn, Rosilene Luduvico, Michael Raedecker, Hiroshi Sugito and David Thorpe how pictures, although mute, may also become "talking pictures" that confront the viewer with precise, specific statements. The works included have a lot to tell, and the more profoundly we delve into them, the more we will recognize ourselves in the stories.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Description: Imagination Becomes Reality is the catalogue for an exhibition cycle at the renowned Goetz Collection, conceived and planned by Ingvild Goetz to present visitors with a selection of the wide variety of forms and techniques in use by contemporary painters. Painting Surface Space, the second… of five books that bring the series to viewers not within visiting distance, focuses on the ways architecture and space are rendered in contemporary art, and the ways electronic media, photography, film and computer simulations, in expanding the means we can employ to design and visualize space, have influenced painting. This interaction of media, ultimately almost always in connection with our state of mind, or with space as a metaphor for such an existential orientation, is at the heart of the juxtapositions this exhibition presents. Thus Painting Surface Space taps into space and architecture in the context of the development of painting as a medium.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? feminist art historian Linda Nochlin famously asked in 1988. It's a rhetorical question that fortunately needn't be asked in the 90s, a decade that produced at least as much great art by women as by artists of any other gender. Primarily devoted to the positi…ons of these young European and American women art makers, The Benefit of Art displays sketches and paintings, photographic works, videos, and installations by Matthew Barney, Rineke Dijkstra, Tracey Emin, Mona Hatoum, Jonathan Horowitz, Sarah Jones, Mike Kelley, Karen Kilimnik, Sarah Lucas, Tracey Moffatt, Cady Noland, Catherine Opie, Pipilotti Rist, Daniela Rossell, Cindy Sherman, Ann-Sofi Sidà n, Sam Taylor-Wood, Gillian Wearing, Sue Williams, and Andrea Zittel. Concentrating on developments in the art of the 90s that have been classified as postfeminist, this book asks whether, and to what degree, the concept itself is useful and applicable. The larger context concerns the state of feminism, one of the most incisive social developments of the 20th century, which saw its traditional, emancipatory approach undergo a reworking in the artistic discourse of a younger generation, whose self-confident inquiries, as personal as they are sociological, evolved from feminist criticism to gender studies. Artists include Mona Hatoum, Andrea Zittel, Matthew Barney, Tracey Emin, Cady Noland, Jonathan Horowitz, Sarah Jones, Mike Kelley, Karen Kilimnik, Sarah Lukas, Tracey Moffatt, Catherine Opie, Rineke Dijkstra, Gillian Wearing, amongst others. Edited by Rainald Schumacher and Thomas Winzen.Essays by Matthias Winzen, Jessica Morgan, Katharina Vossenkuhl, Birgit Sonna, Fritz Emslander, Diana Ebster, Katharina Sykora, Thomas Meinecke, Rainald Schumacher and Barbara Vinken. Paperback, 6.75 x 9.5 in., 250 pages, 140 color illustrations.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Moral World of Halebard is a companion volume of critical essays exploring the major moral, theological, political, and literary themes of The Halebard Cycle. Rather than treating the novels as mere entertainment or worldbuilding exe…rcises, this book argues that Halebard is a deeply structured imaginative world shaped by questions of divine order, repentance, inheritance, corruption, vocation, and civilizational decay. The volume is organized into five major parts. The first examines the soul, salvation, false worship, sin, and necromancy. The second explores rule, dynastic burden, ideology, political corruption, and the moral shape of authority. The third focuses on geography-cities, seas, wilderness, and ruins-as moral environments. The fourth turns to fellowship, women, comedy, and appetite as forces shaping human life. The fifth considers monsters, fantasy conventions, and Halebard's larger place within the tradition of morally serious fantasy.Throughout, the book argues that Halebard uses classic fantasy forms while resisting many modern fantasy assumptions. It retains strong distinctions between corruption and order, true worship and false religion, rightful authority and counterfeit freedom, and human dignity versus anti-creation. As such, the essays present Halebard as a work of conservative moral imagination: one deeply interested in repentance, duty, sanctity, hierarchy, grace, and the hard labor of preserving meaning in a broken world. This student guide is designed to help readers move through each essay carefully, identify key arguments, and apply the book's ideas both to the Halebard novels and to wider questions in literature, culture, and theology.
