With captivating prose and striking imagery, the author transports readers to the heart of these colossal mountain ranges, painting a rich portrait of the harmonious union between humanity and the wilderness. Woven into this rich tapestry are true-to-life stories from seasoned hunters who chance upon breathtaking encounters with the most elusive creatures of the mountains. Through the author's poignant observations, you will meet the wily brown bear, the elusive snow leopard, the stately ibex, and a host of other fascinating animals throughout the terrain. These stories encapsulate the essence of Himalayan wildlife, revealing complex relationships forged in the face of treacherous conditions and the delicate balance of the ecosystem. By unveiling the beauty of these mountains and their inhabitants, this book echoes the urgent need to preserve and respect their fragile existence. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Add to basketFirst edition, first impression, of Rundall's illustrative narrative of his travels through the Himalayas, complete with his own illustrations and sketches. The Ibex of Sha-Ping paints a descriptive replica of the nature and wildlife of the mountain range. The account tells of the juvenile behaviour of loveable bear cubs and the beauty of a mountainous sunset, where "the mountains glow and blaze in their glory for a short space till Nature gradually draws away the rosy veil, and they become once more the gaunt menacing shapes of white, keeping silent watch over the countless beings who dwell far, far below in the twilight of the valleys" (p. 18). Lionel Bickersteth Rundall (1890-1914) was born in the Himalayan region of India and went on several mountaineering expeditions. His work was published posthumously, following his death in the First World War. Large octavo. Colour frontispiece and 15 plates, all with captioned tissue-guards, illustrations in the text. Original green cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, with gilt vignette of a bear cub, front cover lettered in gilt with gilt vignette of an Ibex, covers ruled in blind. Illegible signature dated 1927 on front pastedown; bookseller's ticket of Hugh Rees Ltd on same page. Spine sunned, bumping to spine and tips, minor marks to cloth, occasional foxing throughout, plates bright and clean. A very good copy.
