Emily Lawless (1845-1913), Irish poet and novelist, is one of the "forgotten" women writers of the 19th century. She was a member of the Ascendency but had nationalist sympathies. At one point Yeats disparaged her philosophy but seems to have thought her a good writer. This is a Very Good copy of her fourth novel, originally published in 1886, a Later Printing. Rather scarce, particularly in the American edition. No date; Quercus assumes it to be around 1890 (no copies entered in WorldCat). Light green cloth binding (perhaps faded) with blindstamped decoration in dark red. Clean text, starting to tan; 208 pages, with decorative endpapers. In an archival plastic protector.
