[HOWE, Julia Ward]. RICHARDS, Laura E. and HOWE ELIOTT, Maude. "Julia Ward Howe: 1819-1910." Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1915. First Edition in 2 Volumes. Octavo, original brown cloth and paper boards with gilt spine and titles, Vol. 1 with original white paper cloth dust jacket. One of only 450 copies printed. Each includes a Feminist Manuscript page in Howe's Hand on The Strength of the Female Sex A women's suffrage leader and abolitionist, Howe is best known for penning "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." This biography authored by her two daughters compiles for the first time a large portion of her unpublished work. This volume has 23 illustrations and is in very good to near fine condition, partly thanks to the presence of the original dust jacket, which is an early style made of thin white paper and intended to protect the book rather than as a decorative element on its own, and thus has suffered folds and several chips to front and spine. The white paper covers bear the title, author, and "Large Paper Edition" in black gothic script. Binding strong and tight with remarkably clean pages. A lovely example of a rare limited edition, even more rare for retaining its original jacket. BAL 9530.
