Leather. Condition: Fair. 1873 large family Bible with gilded leather on front and back covers (the spine appears to be a different hardcover material which is left exposes only at the spine, the border of the leather covering is detectable near the spine), gilded decoration on spine and cover with clasp. Douay-Rheims Version Revised with Annotations by Right Rev. R. Challoner. Approbations by the then-archbishops of New York (Archbishop McCloskey) and Philadelphia (Archbishop Wood) included in front matter. Leather cover is worn with sueding effect in many places. There is some peeling at lower edge of spine with exposed white. It is possible that the Bible has been restored in the past with the original leather front and back covers salvaged, but we lack the expertise to tell. Clasp is still functional at center, but small holes and indentations in the leather cover indicate that there were originally three clasps. Binding is intact and pages are without notes and highlighting, but foxing and some other spot staining occur throughout, and minor tearing and other damage to the margins of pages can be seen sporadically. In the back of the Bible is a series of family history pages which are unused, but in need of repair (pages for marriage records and family photos). If you have further specific questions about the condition of the book please let us know and we will do our best to answer them. We are a Benedictine Abbey and Seminary library in Oregon. We appreciate your support.
