Basically, a blank journal book with gentle wash drawings on each page that are supposed to represent the sketches made by Sam Gamgee on his "great journey". The owner is encouraged to write their own story in the blank spaces. A fine copy. Has been reprinted, but this first edition is relatively scarce. The second, "A Hobbit's Journal" (1979. 0894710907) is subtitled: "Being a blank book with some various illustrations of friends & foes of the Nine Companions." Basically, another blank journal book with drawings on each page, and again the owner is encouraged to write their own story in the blank spaces. This was a follow-up to "A Hobbit's Travels", but while the earlier book has vague drawings of trees and landscapes, this book contains detailed drawings of characters and scenes from "Lord of the Rings". Half brown calf with gilt titling and decorative design to spine and boards, map endpapers, thirteen colour plates including frontispiece. In original publisher's slipcase. First Folio Society impression the true first, the later 1979 maroon-boards edition being the second impression despite its frequent misdescription in the trade. The Folio Society's 1976 Hobbit occupies a singular position in the bibliography of Tolkien's most beloved work. Published the year following Tolkien's death, this first Folio Society edition draws directly on the sheets of Allen & Unwin's deluxe edition of the same year, as well as retaining the author's own original illustrations. However, the binding, with its gilt labyrinthine design by Jeff Clements, is among the handsomest Tolkien has received from any publisher. A very good copy in a very good slipcase. Some light scuffing to the leather corners and normal shelf wear to the slipcase exterior, as one expects of a working copy that has spent half a century in a good library. An EX-Library copy with multiple stamps and a library card to the rear. The covers have mild soiling, wear, and corner bumps. The spine has minor end loss, a 3/4" scratch at the top, and evidence of library markings rubbed off the base resulting in some wear as well. The contents of the book are in good condition. Library stamps on front pastedown, ffep, and copyright page. Name and price on ffep. Gutter cracked at 2nd leaf, showing mull, and hinge has moderate play but holding strong. Otherwise good throughout. Rear gutter has minor cracking. Evidence of one library card removed as one still present but loose from rfep. Adhesive for the card visible on page 315 but words are still clearly legible. Stunning frontis illustrated by J.R.R. Only 1000 copies were imported of the 1957 US 9th Impression making it quite collectible.

Book with bright gilt, there are a couple of faint marks to the covers, square, securely bound, pages clean and bright, no inscriptions. Original box, there are a couple of indentations to the box lid on the title label, which is also tanned, some wear and fine scratches to the box. Very good book, good box.

By the convention - one that the publisher, Unwin, would later adopt for this title - of listing edition and then the impression of that edition, this would be the 2nd edition, 6th impression. Green cloth boards, 9 b/w illustrations, a colour frontispiece, red and black endpaper maps and the iconic colour dust jacket, all illustrated by Tolkien. Condition: Very Good Uneven sunning to the spine, where the jacket has been repaired. A small bump to bottom edge of the lower board. A touch of pencil underlining/marginalia, a small handful of blue ink underlining and annotations/single word 'criticism' e.g "weak" and "mean". The first two signatures protrude slightly from the fore-edge, otherwise square and without any lean. Touches of spotting and toning throughout, but not unsightly. Jacket Condition: Good Plus The head of the jacket spine professionally repaired using Japanese tissue to the verso. There is a 3cm x 2.5cm ovoid tide mark to the foot of the spine, clearly visible on the verso, but only showing mildly on the recto. Small chips to the folds and edges, a bit of rubbing to the fold rectos. In September 1947, while writing The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien sent his English publisher some corrections to be included in future printings, as well as a 'specimen of re-writing' of chapter 5 of The Hobbit, bringing it in line with its sequel, The Lord of the Rings, as he had developed it up to that point. In 1951, upon receiving the proofs for a new printing that would become the second edition of The Hobbit, Tolkien wrote to the publisher: ".I never heard any more about it at all; and I assumed that alteration of the original book was ruled out. The sequel now depends on the earlier version; and if the revision is really published, there must follow some considerable rewriting of the sequel. I did not mean the suggested revision to be printed off; but it seems to have come out pretty well in the wash" and agreed to incorporate it, despite having to rewrite parts of The Lord of the Rings. A few minor errors were corrected between the 5th impression of 1951 and this, the 10th of 1958. (Hammond, 1993: A3c) 4500 copies of this impression are thought to have been printed (TolkienBooks, citing the Allen & Unwin Archive) An attractive copy, in solidly good shape, of probably the most desirable and famous work of modern fantasy.

It was published in 1937 to wide critical acclaim, being nominated for the Carnegie Medal and awarded a prize from the New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. It is recognized as a classic in children's literature and is one of the best-selling books of all time, with over 100 million copies sold. The Hobbit is set in Middle-earth and follows home-loving Bilbo Baggins, the titular hobbit who joins the wizard Gandalf and the thirteen dwarves of Thorin's Company on a quest to reclaim the dwarves' home and treasure from the dragon Smaug. Bilbo's journey takes him from his peaceful rural surroundings into more sinister territory. It was not Tolkien's original ambition to become a popular author. Instead, he was interested in philology, particularly the ancient languages and epic literature of the Anglo-Saxons and Scandinavians. After graduating from Oxford he served in the First World War, then returned to the UK to take up a post as lecturer in Philology, first at Leeds and then at Oxford. As early as 1918 Tolkien was devising the elaborate mythology and languages that would form the basis for the Middle Earth of his novels, but his first fantasy book didn't begin to take shape until the late 1920s, when he told his young sons the stories that would become The Hobbit. These were first written down in the early 30s, and in 1936 a former student recommended the story to the publishers Allen & Unwin, who agreed to publish the book following an excited review from their most suitable reader, Stanley Unwin's ten-year-old son Rayner.
