Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The best book about America's first modern secret service. --Washington Post Book World In the months before World War I, FDR prepared the country for conflict with Germany and Japan by reshuffling various government agencies to create the Office of Strategic Services--America's first intelligence agency and the direct precursor to the CIA. When he charged William (Wild Bill) Donovan, a successful Wall Street lawyer and Wilkie Republican, to head up the office, the stage was set for some of the most fantastic and fascinating operations the U.S. government has ever conducted. Author Richard Harris Smith, himself an ex-CIA hand, documents the controversial agency from its conception as a spin-off of the Office of the Coordinator for Information to its demise under Harry Truman and reconfiguration as the CIA. During his tenure, Donovan oversaw a chaotic cast of some ten thousand agents drawn from the most conservative financial scions to the country's most idealistic New Deal true believers. Together they usurped the roles of government agencies both foreign and domestic, concocted unbelievably complicated conspiracies, and fought the good fight against the Axis powers of Germany and Japan. For example, when OS operatives stole vital military codebooks from the Japanese embassy in Portugal, the operation was considered a success. But the success turned into a flop as the Japanese discovered what had happened, and hastily changed a code that had already been decrypted by the U.S. Navy. Colorful personalities and truly priceless anecdotes abound in what may be called the most authoritative work on the subject.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. The history of Asbury Park is a veritable roller coaster of challenge, triumph and change. In 1871, there was nothing but marshes and sand dunes between the sinful city of Long Branch and the holy haven of Ocean Grove, but for devout Methodist James Bradley, the deserted beachfront was a new Promised Land. Thus, the resort community Asbury Park was born as a wholesome entertainment and relaxation center for middle-class, white Protestant America. From bicycles and baby parades to brawlers and bootleggers, Bilby and Ziegler trace Asbury Park's cycles of transformation from peaceful resort to raucous amusement park, from empty boardwalk to modern, bustling center of business.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. James Douglas described Victoria as a perfect Eden when the Hudson's Bay Company first set up its trade depot in what was then Fort Victoria. A few years later, more than 30,000 miners arrived, hoping to find their own Eden in a rich gold strike that set the stage for the tiny settlement's growth into the vibrant city that Victoria has become. Paperback. Condition: Good. Walter McCloud is a boy with dreams unlike most. Introduced as a child to the genius of Balanchine and the lyricism of Tchaikovsky, Walter has always aspired to be a dancer. As he grows older, it becomes clear that despite his desire, he lacks the talent, and he faces the painful knowledge that his more gifted friends have already surpassed him. Soon, however, that pain is overshadowed when his older brother, Daniel, finds a strange lump on his neck and Walter realizes that a happy family can change overnight. The year that follows transforms the McClouds, as they try to hold together in the face of the fearful consequences of Daniel's illness, and Walter makes discoveries about himself and his friendships that will change him forever. Decades later, after Walter has left home and returned, he must come to terms with the memories of that year, and grapple once and for all with the challenge of carving out a place for himself in this all-too-familiar world. A moving story of the torments of sexuality and the redemptive power of family and friendship, The Short History of a Prince confirms Jane Hamilton's place as a preeminent novelist of our time.…

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. HISTORY EDUCATION IS IN DECLINE because it fails to provide knowledge useful in the future as other school subjects do. This book calls on history teachers to restore the power of historical learning. Education exists to impart knowledge useful in the future. School subjects other than history identify general principles derived from their subject matter that describe how the world works, principles that can be applied in the future such as addition in mathematics, grammar in language, and gravity in science. These disciplines pass on their general principles to teachers who pass on this knowledge to students. Historians, however, concentrate on describing events of the past. Without general principles to impart, history teachers are left to recount one-time bygone events, most of which have little or no relevance to the present and future. Without principles useful in the future, history is unable to fulfill the purpose of education the way other school subjects do; society has no practical means to learn from the past; and the cycle of historical ignorance can perpetuate indefinitely. Educators commonly try to compensate for history schooling's lack of knowledge useful in the future by emphasizing skills knowledge instead: critical thinking skills or the job skills of professional historians. Other school subjects also have their critical thinking skills and professional practices, but in these other disciplines general principles constitute the foundation of learning because knowledge of how the world works is a necessary prerequisite to critical thinking. In history education that prerequisite is missing. The truth is, history has been supplying humans with useful principles of knowledge for at least 2,400 years, since the time of Thucydides in Greece and Sun Tzu in China. In earlier times, history could involve more than the act of describing past events; it could involve the ambition to derive from events principles useful in the future, an ambition that the history profession has largely abandoned. This loss deprives historical learning of the power possessed by other intellectual disciplines. If historians wish to concentrate on the role of describing events of the past, that's their business. Then the task of providing knowledge useful in the future falls to history educators, because that's their business.FUNDAMENTALS OF FUTURE-FOCUSED HISTORY TEACHING INCLUDEFive basic principles of history educationA coherent and useful purpose to guide instructionFour kinds of historical knowledge relevant to the futureCriteria for weighing the importance of historical eventsFour essential cognitive learning strategies Author Maxwell believes that Future-Focused History Teaching has the potential to restore to historical learning the power that it once held but has since lost; to return history to its rightful place of prominence among the fundamental realms of knowledge taught in school and college; and to provide important knowledge of how the world works that can help students and society to function effectively in the future.Note: This book is not a classroom teaching guide with a collection of handy lesson plans. This book deals with fundamental premises and practices that underlie the work of every history teacher from grade school through graduate school.…
