There are a few brief written notations. Volume 1: front hinges partially split, missing front blanks. Front cover has an approx. 2" strip of surface loss from the outer edge. One leaf has a tear to the outer portion. This leaf and following leaf have tearing to the upper end of the spine margin. Writing on endpapers. The binding was done with generous inner margins; the book opens readily and fully for comfortable reading. Excellent reference copy.

Vol. II has frontispiece illustration, 3 other illustrations, 2 other plans, and numerous tables, 3 of which fold out. Half leather with marbled paper boards and matching endpapers. Bumped corners and a bit of wear to edges. Some offsetting from plates. Small professional repair to plan in vol. II p. 29. Second plan has tiny tear in edge. Light foxing. Haliburton was a politician, businessman and judge from Nova Scotia who dabbled in fiction as well as writing about history and politics.

All maps, plates, and tables present, including the Publisher's apology "for the appearance of the view of Halifax" tipped in on last page of text vol. I. Old non-archival tape repair to the large folding map. While worn along spines, the original unsophisticated bindings are sound; two thirds of vol. II remains unopened. 8.8 x 5.6 inches.

All maps (2 folding) and engravings (3 folding) present. First fold out map with repair along the Prince Edward Line with some loss otherwise a spectacular copy with edgewear only and clean interiors. Size: 8vo. Book.

Light foxing, some image offsetting on text, hinge repaired, boards and edges worn, somewhat soiled o/w very good. Thomas Chandler Haliburton [1796-1865] was a Canadian politician, businessman and judge from Nova Scotia, who dabbled in fiction in addition to historical and political writings about the history of Nova Scotia and the state of Canadian political affairs.

Original endpapers bound in, Edges toned; some intermittent foxing and staining to text, but in all very bright and near fine. Upper corner of title-pages marginally clipped. Some staining and archival repairs to large folding map. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a very sound and handsome set. All plates, plans and folding maps present and very fine. Publisher's "Apology" stubbed-in at frontispiece of Vol. II. Six maps (two folding), four engraved views, three folding tables -- the Binder's Directions do not mention the Louisbourg and harbour plans included in Vol. I along with the Halifax frontispiece. Torbett Vol. I has a frontis. folding map of N.S., P.E.I. and part of N.B. plus 2 plans of Louisburg (Not mentioned in instructions to binder.). Vol. II has frontis of Halifax, 3 plates (Province House, Windsor, and Annapolis), and 3 maps (routes of Shubenacadie Canal Line). The text covers the period from 1497 to 1828 and is considered a fine example of both scholarship and craftsmanship in the quality of the printing and accompanying engravings. Unfortunately for Joseph Howe, the publisher, it proved to be a financial disaster. This first edition published by him is exceedingly scarce. Bindings have been expertly repaired and have some wear to edges. There is some foxing and offsetting caused by the engravings Half brown calf with marbled boards & gilt tilts to spines.

Haliburton, a Nova Scotian, trained to law, sat in the Assembly from 1826 and was judge in Nova Scotian courts from 1829 till he retired to England in 1856.He later gained distinction as a humourous writer under the pseudonym, Sam Slick." Staton and Tremaine, 1542. Large folding map is of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and has been repaired with no loss of text. Plans include the town of Louisburg, the harbor there and the Fort of Louisburg. Among the plates is a harbor view of Halifax. In volume I, pages 302-303 are misnumbered as 202-203. In volume II, page 164 is misnumbered as 152 and page numbers 175-178 are omitted with no loss of text.

Engraved frontispiece in volume 2 (top edge renewed and backed with Japanese tissue), 6 engraved plates and plans, large folding engraved map of Nova Scotia (short tears and repair on verso near the gutter) and two other maps, including one folding, 3 folding letterpress tables (some occasional pale spotting). Modern half brown morocco, marbled boards, gilt. Provenance: With the bookplate of Clayton W. McCall (1891-1973) local Canadian historian on the front paste-down of each volume; with the small library label of Wolfgang A. Herz, on the front pastedown, his sale "Important Voyages and Travels", 9th December 2009, lot 217. First edition, with a variant imprint in volume one and with 4 preliminary leaves not 7 leaves as called for in Staton & Tremaine and Sabin. However, "some copies which vary from this collation in the preliminary leaves, seem to be perfect" (Sabin). Haliburton's publishing career began "anonymously with "A General Description of Nova Scotia" (1823), followed by the ambitious "Historical and Statistical Account of Nova Scotia", published by Joseph Howe in 1829. "The General Description." encouraged immigrants but the "Historical and Statistical Account" described a colony in an advanced state of cultivation without any need for newcomers" (DNB). Haliburton was born and raised in Nova Scotia, became a lawyer and judge there, but settled in England later in life and achieved literary fame as a popular writer of humorous satires under the pseudonym "Sam Slick".
