Hier liegt die von Jean Gigoux reich illustrierte Ausgabe aus dem Hahr 1838 vor. - Einband leicht bestoßen; Oberes Rückengelenk leicht angebrochen, Gelenke gleichwohl intakt und fest. Seiten etwas braunfleckig. Insgesamt aber ein ordentlich erhaltenes Exemplar. Un volume in-8, 26 x 17,5 cm ; 1,7 kg ; 972 pp. y compris le faux-titre, le frontispice gravé sur bois par Godard, et portrait de Gil Blas, du même, tiré sur Chine, hors texte (Vicaire, V, 242-243). Jean Gigoux (1806-1894) a exécuté les 600 vignettes qui illustrent admirablement le texte et lui valurent une grande notoriété. Reliure légèrement postérieure, demi-veau citron à grands coins, tête dorée, charnières, très bien établie par Coeurdevey qui exerçait rue de Clichy dans le dernier quart du 19e siècle. Dans le Dictionnaire Historique de Menard et Desenne, Le Sage est décrit comme « l'auteur du plus original de nos romanson y trouve des peintures vraies des moeurs des hommes, des choses ingénieuses et amusantes, des réflexions judicieuses. Après le succès de son « Gil Blas », il récidivera avec « Le diable boiteux ». Très bel exemplaire de cette édition capitale dans l'histoire des ouvrages illustrés romantiques.

Gil Blas, das satirische Hauptwerk von Lesage (Autor heute meist so geschrieben, 1668-1747) erschien in vier Bänden zwischen 1715 und 1735; die nach Spanien verlegte Handlung gibt in Wahrheit zeitgenössische französische Verhältnisse wieder. Die vorliegende Ausgabe gilt als Meilenstein der französischen Buchillustration in der Epoche der Romantik.

First and only edition thus, a vast improvement over the edition of 1835. 829 pp. 4to. Attractively bound in 19th-century quarter calf and decorated boards, spine elegantly gilt in six compartments. All edges marbled. Original printed wraps preserved. Front hinge cracked (but solid) and a bit of light wear to extremities of binding. Internally FINE AND BRIGHT. Copies on Chinese paper are exceedingly rare, even more so with the original wraps preserved (as here.).

En 1835, Jean GIGOUX, enrôlé dans la bataille des romantiques, réalise plusieurs portraits de Delaroche, Delacroix, Walter Scott, Alfred de Vigny, etc., pour L'Artiste. Il dessine les vignettes pour le Gil Blas afin de payer les couleurs et les modèles d'une grande toile pour le salon, Les derniers moments de Léonard de Vinci. "Dès son apparition, le Gil Blas est enlevé par milliers d'exemplaires" ce livre à "remis en usage la gravure sur bois" et "substitué aux planches hors-texte.la gravure dans le texte" (Béraldi VII-112/113). Coins très légèrement émossés sinon bel exemplaire. Premier tirage, illustrations de Jean Gigoux, frontispice, vignette de titre, portrait de Gil Blas hors texte sur Chine et environ 600 vignettes dans le texte gravées sur bois. Texte encadré d'un double filet noir. Ruban fut l'un des grands relieurs de la fin du 19e siècle et du début du 20e siècle. Né à Villefranche-sur-Saône en 1851, il exerça à Paris de 1879 à 1910, il s'est éteint à Neuilly le 21 avril 1929, à l'âge de 79 ans. Il avait installé son premier atelier au 16, rue Dauphine, avant de le transférer au 9 rue de Savoie en 1896. Contrairement à nombre de ses confrères Ruban était à la fois relieur et doreur décorateur, il se distingue par des décors emblématiques complexes et dans le travail du cuir, en particulier des mosaïques, mais est également capable de proposer des réalisations plus simples à l'exécution parfaite. Il fût l'un des relieurs les plus en vogue au tournant du siècle et si les plus grands bibliophiles lui confièrent leurs ouvrages (Barthou, Beraldi, Borde, Baron de Claye, etc.), il était également collectionneur et réalisa pour sa propre bibliothèque un nombre important de reliures. 115 furent ainsi dispersées à Drouot le 12 décembre 1910, année de son départ à la retraite. Dans le catalogue, la collection était décrite comme « riche de beaux livres modernes en édition de luxe recouverts par de riches reliures composant la bibliothèque de M. Pétrus Ruban, ex-relieur ».
