Le comte de Chambord félicite son ami Alfred Nettement sur son ouvrage consacré "a cette dernière page militaire des annales de la monarchie". Il y évoque l'ouverture de "nouvelles routes à la civilisation chrétienne" et exalte cette "grande entreprise glorieusement terminée après 17 ans d'efforts par la chute de la puissance musulmane" dans "cette terre d'afrique où St Louis est venu mourir" - Il insiste sur la valeur des chefs militaires et de l'armée française dans cette entreprise. Nous avons là un témoignage éclairant les prémices de sa pensée sur la question algérienne. Ses réflexions aboutiront à la publication de sa fameuse lettre sur l'Algérie le 30 janvier 1865.
