Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This is a first edition, Prohibition Era bartender's guide "HERE'S HOW AGAIN!" by Judge Jr. 1929 1st edition, 1st printing (with "First Published, January, 1929" stated on the copyright page); The John Day Company; New York. Hardcover with gilt lettering on the front cover. Small in size - the book measures 5" tall x 3 1/4" wide. This volume includes a recipe for the "Tomato Cocktail," a non-alcoholic predecessor to the Bloody Mary. The contents are grouped into the following categories: Applejack Drinks; Applejack and Brandy Drinks; Bacardi Drinks; Brandy Drinks; Gin Drinks; Gin-Bacardi Drinks; Rye Drinks; Scotch Drinks; Miscellaneous. From the author's Foreword: "It is a tragic fact indeed but cocktail mixing in the United States is a lost art. Since the advent of prohibition experienced (and wise) bartenders have left for sunnier climes, leaving drink mixing in the hands of ignorant speakeasy proprietors and amateur home mixers whose idea of a cocktail is some orange juice and gin thrown together in a shaker. Is it any wonder that stomach specialists have reaped a harvest when they have not only poor liquors but atrocious mixers both working for them? For this reason I have dedicated my 1929 Edition of "Here's How" to the delicate art of drink mixing in the hope of renewing an interest in a lost art and in that way doing my bit toward alleviating the suffering of mankind both legislative and physical." Condition: Some light soiling to the covers. The primary issue with this copy is that there are large bits of paper missing at the top and bottom edges of the spine (please see photos). Tiny paper tear at the top-left corner of the back corner. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are clean and nearly appear unread with only a small, light stain at the outer edge of page 8. Overall the book is in Good- condition (it would grade higher if not for the missing paper bits on the spine).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very good +. 4th Printing. Twenty-fourmo size, 63 pp. Norman Hume Anthony (1889-1968), cartoonist and illustrator, editor of Judge Magazine and, later, Life Magazine, authored this bar book during Prohibition in America. A predecessor of the 1930 "Savoy" cocktail book, which takes many recipes from "Here's How!", this book contains many popular cocktail recipes from the early twentieth century, accompanied by Anthony's witticisms in the form of suggested "toasts" to go with each drink, printed at the bottom of each page. This delightful volume shows the liveliness during the Prohibition era that pervaded the 1920s despite the laws in place (the Prohibition law would not be repealed until five years after this book was published). This book is the fourth printing of the first edition, printed in March 1927, two months after the first impression. ___DESCRIPTION: Full light blue paper with gilt lettering on the front board, blue endpapers, title page in orange and black with a black woodcut of a portrait of Judge Jr., facsimile of Judge Jr.'s signature at the end of the foreword, running headings with orange text and black decorative borders throughout, orange illustration on the colophon at the end of the book; twenty-fourmo size (5" by 3.25"), pagination: [1-4] 5-62 [1 colophon]. ___CONDITION: Volume is better than very good; with mostly clean boards, straight corners with no rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; bottom corners are very gently bumped, extremely slight rubbing to the head of the spine, and there is a stain on the front cover (approximately 1.5"). Overall, volume is near fine, but is being listed as very good + because of the stain. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Please contact us with any questions you may have, we are here to help.
