Hardback. Condition: Very Good. A powerful and lively work of immersive journalism, Brin-Jonathan Butler's account of his time chasing the American dream through Cuba Whether he's hustling his way into Mike Tyson's mansion for an interview, betting his life savings on a boxing match (against the favorite), becoming romantically entangled with one of Fidel Castro's granddaughters, or simply manufacturing press credentials to go where he wants--Brin-Jonathan Butler has always been the act first, ask permission later kind of journalist. The Domino Diaries is the culmination of Butler's decade spent in the trenches of Havana, trying to understand a culture perplexing to westerners: one whose elite athletes regularly forgo multimillion-dollar opportunities to stay in Cuba and box for their country, while living in penury. Butler's fascination with this distinctly Cuban idealism sets him off on a remarkable journey, training with, befriending, and interviewing the champion boxers that Cuba seems to produce more than any other country. In the process, though, Butler gets to know the landscape of the exhilaratingly warm Cuban culture--and starts to question where he feels most at home. In the tradition of Michael Lewis and John Jeremiah Sullivan, Butler is a keen and humane storyteller, and the perfect guide for this riotous tour through the streets of Havana.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. For Dave Schaefer on his 32-foot sloop Dream Weaver, the urge to see Cuba now and track down Ernest Hemingway's old haunts was too strong to resist. The voyage began on Lake Champlain near Burlington, Vermont. Travelling alone, with friends joining as crew when they could, Schafer sailed through the historic Champlain Canal to the Hudson river, along the East coast and the Intracoastal Waterway, finally arriving at the keys. Leaving Key west, Schaefer sailed 90 miles across the Gulf Stream to Marina Hemingway in Havana. For the entire century, Cuba had been the stage for the glamorous and powerful; Teddy Roosevelt's charge up San Juan Hill, the mob years under Meyer Lansky, Krushchev and Kennedy bringing the world to the brink of war over missile installations, the disaster at the Bay of Pigs, the charisma of che, and endless embargoes. The last year of the millennium marked the centennial of Hemingway's birth and the fortieth anniversary of Fidel's Revolution.…

Paperback. Condition: Fair. Ernest Hemingway always had cats as companions, from the ones he adored as a child in Illinois and Michigan, to the more than 30 he had as an adult in Paris, Key West, Cuba, and Idaho. All are chronicled and most are pictured here, along with revelations about how they fit into the many twists and turns of his life and loves. In 1943, Ernest Hemingway, living in the Finca in Cuba with his third wife and eleven cats, wrote to his first wife: "One cat just leads to another. The place is so damned big it doesn't really seem as though there were many cats until you see them all moving like a mass migration at feeding time." He called the cats "purr factories" and "love sponges" who soaked up love in return for comfort and companionship. He gave each a name that suited its character, including F. Puss, Fatso, Friendless, Feather Kitty, Princessa, Furhouse, Uncle Woofer, and his last cat in Idaho, Big Boy Peterson. In this updated and edition, you'll also meet his nine dogs, a cow, and a young great horned owl that he rescued not long before his death. Hemingway's Cats reveals a softer side to the writer's character than is usually portrayed through the macho image of the hunter and fisherman. He sought the cats' comfort in times of stress and loneliness, and he featured some of them in his writings, particularly in A Moveable Feast, Islands in the Stream, The Garden of Eden, and True at First Light--all written late in his life and as close to autobiography as he ever came.…
