Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust jacket included. First edition. Coolidge, Dane: HELL'S HIP POCKET. New York: Dutton, 1938. First Edition. Front free flyleaf has been neatly removed, otherwise Very Good hardcover of one of Coolidge's scarcest titles, in a stunning, fiery action-dustwrapper. There is slight edgewear, the spine panel is a touch faded, and the dust jacket has been reinforced from behind with brown paper. Despite its faults, this is overall one of the most spectacular jackets ever put on a western adventure. Detectives disguised as outlaw drifters arrive in cattle country near the Grand Canyon intent on solving a rustling problem that has lost pioneer cattlemen over 10,000 head. The author was as fascinating as his novels. He was both a Harvard man and a bring-em-back-alive adventurer who captured animals for leading zoos, before becoming a wildlife photographer and Wild West romancer. Rarely offered in first edition and dust jacket, the most recent copy encountered was from George Houle Rare Books catalogued for $500. Without dust jacket it lists in the $70 to $100 range. Because of the back-reinforcing on this dust jacket, we can't price it as a premium copy, but we don't think anyone would be disappointed in it.
