Publisher's black and red cloth (edges slightly foxed, minor wear to extremities). Limited to 500 copies. The catalogue of the collection formed by a psychiatrist Haskell F. Norman from San Francisco, encompassing descriptions of 2,595 medical, mathematical, and scientific works collected over four decades. "This catalogue is intended both as a record of the library and as detailed bibliographical guide to many first editions of classic of science and medicine for collectors, librarians and booksellers. While numerous individual authors and scientific and medical subjects represented in this catalogue have previously received detailed bibliographical treatment, this is the first catalogue to provide complete annotated descriptions, with full collations, for a very wide range of the classics in the history of science and medicine." (from the preface by Jeremy Norman). Included two insightful essays: "My education as a bibliophile" by Haskell Norman and "This catalogue and its predecessors" by Jeremy Norman.

First Edition
Regular edition, limited to 465 copies. 2 vols, two-tone cloth, 4to, 29 cm, 100 pp. 24 colour plates & 396 black & white text illustrations. A luxurious fully annotated catalogue, with collations, paginations and plate counts, describing some 2,285 significant first editions in the history of science and medicine, together with some 172 items on Freud and some 153 on Franz Anton Mesmer and Mesmerism. Especially strong in association and presentation copies. In a contemporary review, Owen Gingerich wrote: "The significance of each work is succinctly described. Collations include the arrangement of signatures for the earlier books, and provenances generally report the name of the bookseller. Norman's collection includes not only the great works of the Scientific Revolution- Galileo, Kepler, Newton - and more recent names -Babbage, Darwin, Einstein- but also medical works. Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica (1543) is the colored presentation copy to Charles V; William Harvey's De motu cordis (1628) had been owned by Constantyn Huygens. Because this outstanding collection is so wide ranging, this beautiful (but, alas, understandably expensive) work should become a standard reference for classics in the history of science." Very minor spotting to top edges, otherwise a Near Fine set.
