Book is in very good condition, marred only by a very faint smoke smell, a light bump on bottom of spine, and a few small very light smudges on edges of the text block. Binding is sound and square, with no crease in the spine. Covers are sharp cornered, unfaded, unmarked and otherwise unworn. Pages are unmarked and unworn. The unclipped dust jacket is also in very good condition: whole, unfaded and unmarked, with traces of corner wear, light bump at bottom of spine, and a little sun toning on top edge of the back. As with all Space Age Book purchases, I will ship this book in a moisture proof wrapping, padded in bubble wrap, inside a sturdy box to assure it reaches its proud new owner in the same condition as my description. Note: shipment outside the USA will require additional postage for this very heavy (over 4 pound) book.

The first edition was, according to the "Handgun Digest", the "most significant single book on the history of this type of weapon." Previously, the author had a number of books, and many articles, on firearms published. For the second edition the last chapter of the original was deleted and replaced by new material, totalling 14,000 words with new illustrations "to record recent handgun history." Opening chapters, going back to the 14th Century, deal with matchlock and flintlock weapons, follow delevlopment to the percussion pistol, the influence of machine tools on firearms production, to cartridge revolvers and their modern sucessors, multi-shot and self-loading pistols to "the automatic pilstol perfected, In seperate chapters, but continuing the chronological sequence, important developmonts such as the Colt weapons and some significent country contributions are included in the 16 chapters.
