He wrote at a time when most books on astronomy were written either for children/beginners or experts in the field without many titles available for the educated layperson. First done in 1 volume, it was expanded over the years eventually running three volumes in this 4th edition. This was his most significant work, but he published other works on astronomy including "The Story of the Comets in 1909", a favorite topic, which anticipated the excitement around the return of the Halley's Comet in 1910. He also wrote tourist guidebooks for Eastbourne and Sussex, along with theological works and works for scientific journals. A leather bookplate in volume 1 indicates that this set was awarded for the Howard Quinquennial Prize, which was awarded to Robert Abbott Hadfield by the Institution of Civil Engineers for session 1901-1902. Hadfield was a metallurgist who developed the alloy of manganese steel, an alloy of exceptional durability that found uses in the construction of railroad rails and rock-crushing machinery (Britannica).
