He developed an important garden at Myddelton House near Enfield, Middlesex , He was known as 'The Crocus King and his name has been preserved in many varieties of plant . He was the Great Uncle of Andrew Parker-Bowles , Queen Camilla's ex husband. Complete with all plates. The book is in Very Good condition , the dustjacket is complete and clean to the front but withlosses to top of jacket spine and top of rear cover. A very scarce first edition of this work, more commonly found is a later 1985 edition. A charming botanical work concerning crocus and colchicum, with much information on the character, species, groups, and other notes. With a bibliography of the crocus and index to conclude.Written by E. A. Bowles, popular British horticulturalist, plantsman, and garden writer, a well-known authority in the botanical world, particularly for his impressive garden at Myddelton House, Bulls Cross in Enfield, Middlesex. His name appears in many varieties of plant.Collated, complete with twenty four full page plates; twenty-three of the original plates and captions were excised and tipped in to variant colour pages bound in with the volume, grangerised with nineteen illustrations tipped in to the variant coloured pages, some in colour after drawings by Bowles, others from articles or black and white photographic plates, all illustrating further crocus with captions. Three further illustrations were tipped in to p. 175, 182, and 185.Letters inscribed and signed by the author tipped in to p. 26 and 51, both dated 1934 discussing particulars of crocus, flowers, and sharing further botanical information. Externally sound with shelf wear, spine lightly bumped and chipped to the head and tail, minor loss to the head of the spine, back strip now laid down, spine lightly darkened. Ex libris bookplate to the front pastedown dated 1934, gift bookplate to the front free endpaper 'To Edward from Harry and Elsa' dated 1934; 'Mr. E. A. Bowles' article from 'The Times' (1934) tipped in to verso front free endpaper. Bookplate 'from Elsa and Harry' tipped in to the half title. Featuring two letters inscribed and signed by the author tipped in to p. 26 and 51, dated 1934. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally very clean and bright throughout, light spotting affects the occasional leaf particularly to the first and last few.
