Decorative Cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket As Issued. Guilderoy: A Novel by "Ouida" was published by Hurst & Co., 122 Nassau Street, New York, in, I'm guessing/estimating, 1910. Not an ex-library copy, this 4 3/4" x 7 1/8", 400-page offering indicates no year of publication that I could find anywhere, but it is clearly an early 20th century product, if not somewhat pre-1900 in origin. There is fairly noticeable browning of endpapers front and back as well as text's pages, and said edges of pages are a tad on the brittle side, which speaks also to the volume's age. Some little webbing is seen between front, and back, endpapers. Browning/staining are observed at bottoms of pages of entire text, and less so at top edges of same. I do not know who "Ouida" was, although I CAN say that this is not the first of his/her novels that I've had in my possession. Our protagonist, Evelyn Herbert, Lord Guilderoy, our worthy hero, is, at the outset, clearly rich, clearly bored up to the eyeballs of his handsome face, clearly uninspired, and clearly being harassed by his sister, Lady Hilda Sunbury, for not finding his niche/vocation in life, and thus becoming one of the great men of England(which she is certain he has the talents to rise to). We soon meet our hero's cousin, Lord Aubrey, member of the House of Commons, servant of The People, who makes our hero look all the more lazy, aimless, and cynical. Oh, and our hero is hopelessly in love with a beautiful, Italian noblewoman who demands that he fly immediately to her side as proof of his love for her. But, he will not be ordered about by a mere woman--he cannot bring himself to go to Italy, much as he worships the ground she walks on. Get the idea? This book, Reader, is the sort of stuff that helped establish the still most impressive reputation of Public Broadcasting's Masterpiece Theater during the 1970's and 80's. If this is your type of story, then this IS your type of story--it's just that simple. Long conversations, over tea in the drawing room, about everything from politics to morality to the servants to love interests to literature to war and peace, are the running bill of fare.
