Pitman who served as the Game Warden for Uganda for several years. Originally published in a less attractive form in 1938 in Uganda, the publishers shipped out almost the entire stock to London for distribution, but during the last war the entire stock was destroyed by enemy bombs. In 1974, Wheldon & Wesley , publishers and natural history book sellers now defunct)undertook and Revised the text and photographs and other illustrations including 29 color plates, monograms, maps and folding charts with the result , this compact size beautiful volume was created. Appears to be hardly used. A nice tight volume , no dj was issued.

Hailed as the best Afican book on Snakes ever produced, even this limited edition reprint became very scarce. Large format (appx.8x10")289 pages with index and packed with beautiful color plates, written by a former Game Warden (and author of two other books) after a lifetime observation of these reptiles in East Africa. A small prev.owner stamp on fep. A very attractive crisp copy for the serious collector.

Original red cloth with gilt title on the spine and gilt and black title on the front board. = The updated and expanded edition of a work first published in parts. Still the best work on the snakes of East Africa. Written by the British game warden, conservationist, and herpetologist Charles Robert Senhouse Pitman (1890-1975). The plates are very good. Bookseller's label and a few glue remnants on the front pastedown; small number written in the top margin of the front free endpaper recto. Otherwise, an excellent, clean copy.
