Gray paper covers rubbed with scuffing along edges; light surface abrasion at front covers' center top margin. Author's four-line ink inscription "For - | Dr. E. Lee Dorsett | Sincerely | D. Alexander Brown" upon the half-title page along with Dr. Dorsett's pencil note "10/15/65" which was presumably that date that the book was signed; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding remains fairly crisp. A very good+ copy. Uncommon book by University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign professor Dee Brown reviewing the famous seventeen day raid through Mississippi by the 6th and 7th Illinois and the 2nd Iowa Cavalry regiments led by Union Army Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson. Between April 17 and May 2, 1863, Grierson marched 800 miles with 1700 men and effectively distracted Confederate forces from General Ulysses S. Grant's Vicksburg thrust.…

There is a previous owner's gift notation on the half title page. It appears this was a gift for a professor at the University of Illinois from his students, who signed their names on the free page after the last page of text. The dust jacket has edge wear, rubbing, several small tears and nicks. "Hamilton, the commander of the Corinth section of Grant's division, suggested what would eventually become Grierson's Raid. Subsequently, due to Hamilton's insistence on procuring a command that would garner him more glory, Hamilton offered his resignation. Grant quickly accepted. In the Western Theater of the American Civil War, Confederate cavalry raids under commanders such as Lt. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest and Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan had harassed Union expeditions, namely at the Battle of Parker's Crossroads, where Forrest captured three hundred Union soldiers under Brig. Gen. Jeremiah C. Sullivan, but lost all of the artillery pieces belonging to his own command. The task of drawing the attention of Confederate raiders away from the Siege of Vicksburg fell to Col. Benjamin Grierson, a former music teacher who disliked horses after being kicked in the head by one as a child.
