The binding is the original two-tone green pictorial boards, stamped in black on the spine and front cover. This is the DEDICATION COPY. The book's printed dedication is to the author's mother. On that page, beneath "For My Mother" the author has penned: "and this copy especially with a heart full of love from your lucky daughter [signed] Joy." Although Beatrice Joy Chute's books were published under the name B. J. Chute, she preferred to be called Joy. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1913, Joy moved in the early 1940s to New York City with her two sisters and mother, Edith Mary Pickburn Chute -- "E.M.C." for short. Both sisters, Marchette "Marrie" Chute and Mary Grace Chute (later Mary Chute Smith, of Morristown, N.J.) were also gifted writers. From 1964 until her death in 1987, Joy taught creative writing at Barnard College as adjunct professor of English. She served as president of the American Center of P.E.N. and twice was a judge in the National Book Awards. Among B. J. Chute's other books are: THE FIELDS ARE WHITE; THE BLUE CUP; SHATTUCK CADET; THE END OF LOVING; KATIE, AN IMPERTINENT FAIRY TALE; and THE GOOD WOMAN.
