Laumer was, prior to his writing career, an officer in the United States Air Force, and a diplomat in the United States Foreign Service. He was trained for war, and he experienced international politics first-hand -- experiences which he put to good use in his many stories. Laumer is known for the Retief series of intergalactic political - espionage novels.
