A giant funeral processionwends its way from the city center eastwardtoward the Père-Lachaise Cemetery, accompaniedby the sounds of Chopin's funeralmarch. The photojournalist Gerda Taro had beenkilled in the Spanish Civil War a few days earlier.Thousands come to pay their last respects to theémigrée from Hitler's Germany. The poet LouisAragon speaks at the graveside, young girls holdup a large portrait of the deceased. Why did theFrench Communist Party honor a foreigner - onewho was not even a member of the Party - witha 'first-class' burial Ernest Hemingway is said to have found GerdaTaro while searching for 'better Germans',the term he used to describe Germans fightingon the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War.Taro is today considered one of the path-breakingpioneers of photography. She captured someof the most dramatic and widely published imagesof the Spanish Civil War and was the firstfemale photographer to shoot images in themidst of battle. Her willingness to work close tothe fighting set new standards for war photographyand ultimately cost her her life. Taro standsalongside early twentieth century war photographerslike Robert Capa and David 'Chim' Seymour. Her death, the first fatality during war coverage, garnered worldwide attention. She hadbroken new ground, as a woman and as a photographer.Despite this, Gerda Taro has largely fallen intooblivion, especially in comparison to her colleagueand partner Robert Capa. Whether genderand religion played a role in this would requirea separate investigation. In any case, in herstudy of women resisting fascism, Ingrid Stroblreaches the conclusion that a combination suchas woman-Communist-Jew represented a threefoldstigma, and would almost guarantee Taro'sexclusion from official history, both in the Eastand the West.It has been almost twenty years since the firstbiography of Gerda Taro, written by Irme Schaber, led to Taro's rediscovery as a photographer.Since that time, the discovery of the 'MexicanSuitcase', containing more than 800 of her photos, has made new research on Taro possible. In this new, fully revised biography, Irme Schaberpresents groundbreaking insights regardingcameras, copyrights and the circumstances surroundingTaro's death.

There she met the now legendary photographer Robert Capa, with whom she traveled to Spain at the start of the Civil War. As his lover and photographic partner--and as his manager--she is often credited with launching his career. She was also the first woman photojournalist to enter the heat of battle. The couple worked together until Taro was killed while photographing a crucial clash near Madrid in July 1937, just six days shy of her twenty-sixth birthday. The International Center of Photography holds by far the world's largest collection of Taro's work, including approximately 200 prints as well as original negatives. This selective survey of the ICP's holdings is organized chronologically, and set in context with the inclusion of magazine layouts; it is the first major collection of Gerda Taro's photographs ever published. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

Sprache: deutsch.

Gerda Taro was a pioneer photojournalist--the first woman to photograph in the heat of battle--whose legacy, cut short by her untimely death at the age of 27, consists almost exclusively of photographs from the very front lines of the Spanish Civil War, one of the twentieth century's most important conflicts. Taro's images are a little-known record of a pivotal moment in the history of war photography, though she worked alongside the legendary photojournalist Robert Capa, who was her photographic as well as romantic partner, and the two collaborated closely (as Capa's manager, Taro is often credited for launching his career). While Taro was covering the decisive Battle of Brunete in July, the car in which she was traveling was broad sided by a Republican tank; she died from her injuries the next day. This volume, the first major collection of Taro's photographs ever published, introduces nearly 100 of her images, courtesy of New York's International Center of Photography, which now holds the world's largest collection of her work, including nearly 200 prints and original negatives. Ref A4 1.

Add to basketBuch. Condition: Neu.

Hardcover. Condition: New in publisher's shrink wrap. First edition. Large Quarto. Original photo-illustrated boards with white lettering on cover, black, white and purple on spine. "In her brief but dramatic career, Gerda Taro made some of the most striking photographs to come from the front lines of the Spanish Civil War. Her work is explored in this first full-scale monograph." (Publisher). Taro is regarded as the first woman photojournalist to have died while covering the front line in a war. Gerda Taro (Gerta Pohoylle) was a German war photographer and the companion and professional partner of Robert Capa. She had escaped anti-Semitism in Germany moving to France in 1934 where she met the photojournalist Endre Friedmann, an Hungarian Jew. Pretending to be the agent of Robert Capa (meaning shark in Hungarian and the nickname of Friedmann in Hungary) they sold both of their own photographic work under Capa's name in Paris. Capa kept the name dispite the fact that the ploy had been found out and Gerta changed her name to Gerda Taro.
