This copy is signed and dedicated by the author to Wilfrid Ward, the noted collector, and bears the bookplate of Wilfrid Ward to the front paste down. Norman Dixon is uniquely qualified to author this book: he is an engineer an silversmith by profession, as well as a firearm collector. His description of each of the pistols reviewed shows his appreciation of the finer points of flintlock pistol making in the 18th Century. Horse pistols are described in the first chapter. Examples of the high quality work of all of the well known makers are examined in detail: LeMaire, Barbar, Johnson, Griffin and Heylin along with later craftsmen Manton and Mortimer. The work of many other artisans are also included. Most of the pieces feature silver stock hardware (or, furniture), again, an area of expertise for this author. So, this book is really about the very high quality pistols of the 18th Century officer and gentleman. The second chapter covers the turn-off barrel pistols. Both side lock and box lock are described with the same attention to craftsmanship. Some percussion pocket -type pistols are also included in this section. There is a brief section on military horse pistols. After each chapter, there follows scale drawings of the breech and pan section of several pistols, with steel and top jaw profiles also included. Finally there is an extensive appendix covering silver stock furniture makers, hallmark codes and touch marks. Ref OO 2. Signed by Author(s).
