Water or tea dampness stain to bottom corner of Book 1's frontispiece, causing some age-staining and foxing. Off-setting to book 1's title page from frontispiece. Book 2's original publisher's boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of Book 2's spine bumped; paper title label chipped at front hinge. Normal toning throughout both text-blocks, with instances of age-staining and off-setting. All plates intact in Book 2. Bindings of text-blocks remain intact; Book 1's binding needs repair. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. George Adams the younger (1750 1795) was an English scientist, optician and scientific writer. He was mathematical instrument maker to King George III of Great Britain, succeeding his father George Adams in the post. He also made globes. Around 1770, Adams invented the lucernal microscope, a type of projection microscope where the image is projected on a screen by a large oil lamp, as to make it easier to draw or trace the image. Adams wrote elementary scientific works, and on the use of mathematical instruments. He often combined religious with a scientific content, against, according to the Gentleman's Magazine, the "growing errors of materialism, infidelity, and anarchy". He started writing at a young age, and developed a love for it. His main interests were science and mathematics. Originally published in 1791, this is the fourth edition (1813), complete with the edition of plates (34 plates total). RAREB1813HOOB-0523-aj0120 FORN-SHELF-0467-BB-2410-HKREV166.

In politics Adams was a Tory, and as such was received with favour at court by George III, who made him his official mathematical instrument maker, succeeding his father George Adams in the post. George III was personally interested in instruments and had Adams produce items for him exclusively, many in silver. These instruments now form a collection which is housed in London's Science Museum Royal Collection Adams was also known for making globes, and for inventing the lucernal microscope, a type of projection microscope where the image is projected on a screen by a large oil lamp, to make it easier to draw or trace the images.
