Hardcover. F. 4to., 29cm, x,[2],111,[ii],17,18pp., plus frontis portrait and 12 aquatint plate illustrations by David Allan, complete with half-title, glossary, and 18 plates of engraved sheet music songs, from the ballad opera version, bound in contemporary full tree calf, gilt rules for bands and gilt decorations in the panels, crushed crimson morocco label, gilt titles, marbled endpapers, expertly rebacked, a fine copy (cgc) First illustrated edition with the acclaimed aquatint plates by the Scottish artist, engraver, plate-publisher and bookseller, David Allan, who was trained by the Foulis brothers in Glasgow. He had shown a talent for caricature, but it was his work in Rome (where he had received the advice and encouragement of Gavin Hamilton, to whom this book is dedicated), especially his carnival sketches, which augmented his growing reputation. After a period of portrait painting in London, he settled in Edinburgh in 1780 as director of the Trustees' Academy. Allan's illustrations of Ramsay's enormously popular Scottish pastoral drama (first published in 1725) much increased his popularity as an illustrator, and established his reputation as the artist of 'Scottish character'. Gaskell. The Foulis Press, 688. Rothschild 1732.

First Edition thus. First Illustrated Edition of this widely popular pastoral comedy in vernacular Scots, with glossary and evocative engravings by David Allan. Large 4to: [4,including half title],x,[2],111,[3],17(glossary),[1]pp, with portrait frontispiece, 12 numbered uncolored aquatints by David Allan, and 9 engraved leaves of music and words, numbered 1-18. Text based on quarto edition of 1728. Contemporary tree calf, neatly rebacked preserving original richly gilt flat spine and red morocco lettering piece gilt. An excellent very wide-margined in a well-preserved contemporary binding, plates in rich impressions, occasional spotting to text but generally clean and bright. Gaskell (Foulis) 688. Abbey (Life) 244. Rothschild 1732. Martin 216. The Foulis Press first published The Gentle Shepherd (which was originally published by, in 1725, in Edinborough, Glasgow, and London) in 1743, then again in 1745, 1747, 1750, and 1752, before issuing this handsomely illustrated edition in 1788. The play was first performed as a ballad opera in 1747, from which the supplemental eighteen pages of engraved songs were taken. David Allan (1744-1796), known as "the Scottish Hogarth, explains in the dedication, which prominently follows directly on the title page: "It will be easily seen that I am not a master in the mechanical part of this art: but my chief intention was not to offer expensive and smooth engravings, but expressive and characteristic designs." Thus the conscious naivety of his style echoes the simplicity of the country folk whom he depicts. His twelve plates were the first use in Scotland of aquatints for book illustration. N. B. Half Morocco, Marbled Boards. Condition: Near Fine. First Illustrated Edition. 4to. 30 by 23 cm. iv, x, ii, 111, iii, 17, i, 18 pp. Hand-colored portrait frontis of Ramsay plus twelve hand-colored aquatint plates. Ramsay's enormously successful play dates to 1725. It celebrates rural life, particularly that in Scotland of the day. The principal character of Sir William Worthy is supposedly based on the pretenderJames Stuart. The play employs light Scottish dialect throughout. This edition of the play has an useful glossary of Scottish words, and also eighteen engraved pages of songs (with musical notation) inspired by the play. The light caricature illustrations by David Allan, which are original to this edition, perfectly complement the material, and the coloring, although possibly not arranged for by the publisher, captures the rich lushness of the countryside and its picturesque country folk. Some rubbing to the boards. Light dustsoiling within, and occasional light spotting.

First edition of this translation, 8vo, pp. viii, xi (subscriber list), [2], 103, 103 (English and Scottish text parallel on facing pages), [1], 6, [2] errata; original blue paper-covered boards, cream paper shelfback, manuscript title on spine; small paper shelf label at the foot of the spine; lightly rubbed, spine a little darkened, else very good. With the contemporary ownership signature of "Tweeddale" on title page - Marquis of Tweedale appears in the subscriber list. Ramsay (1686-1758), not to be confused with the portrait artist of the same name - his son - was by turns a wig-maker, poet, bookseller, publisher, editor, and playwright. He was an vocal promoter of Scots poetry and poets. His own chief composition was The Gentle Sheperd, first printed in 1725, a work that attained great popularity but went for many years without being translated into English. In her preface, Margaret Turner makes clear "it is a great disadvantage to this beautiful poem that it is written in the old rustic dialect of Scotland, which, in a short time, will probably be entirely obsolete, and not intelligible." Lowndes indicates that there were two English versions that preceded this one, one by Cornelius Vanderstop in 1777, and one by W. Ward in 1785. Given the fact that "Tweeddale" appears on the title page, the fact that John, Charles, and James Hay are listed among the book's subscribers, and the fact that members of the Hay family had for many years been marquises of Tweedale, there is a very strong likelihood that this is a subscriber's copy.
