He served as president of the American Mathematical Society, 1938-1940, and editor of the AMERICAN JOURNAL OF MATHEMATICS, 1927-1936. From the DSB (Vol. 17, pp. 270-272): "Much of Evans's work built upon mathematical innovations introduced by Henri Lebesque, Vito Volterra, Maurice Frechet, and Henri Poincarà during his student years.".
