      Presumed first edition (no direct statement but with matching dates upon title and copyright pages) SIGNED AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR. xii, 528, [2] pages. Hardcover: H 26cm x L 17.5cm. Lacks dust jacket. Blue cloth rubbed, gilt stamped lettering to spine and front board remains bright, light bumping to bottom board corners and spine ends. Edges toned and foxed; toning to endpapers; seven-line ink ownership inscription of Yale student James. L. Howell on front free endpaper. B/w photo possibly of James Howell laid-in at front endpapers; newspaper clippings regarding Professor Hille laid-in between pages 72-73 and 138-139; two postcards to James Howell laid-in; January 1949 Yale final exam for Math 133A laid-in at pages 224-225; Yale piano recital program for March 1949 laid-in at pages 266-267; folded two sheet "Problem for Mr. James L. Howell" laid-in at pages 502-503. Some toning occurring to interior pages at laid-in items but interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A very good copy with Dr. Hille's two-line ink inscription "Einar Hille | 10-28-48" at title page's top right corner. Dr. James L. Howell (1917-2002) earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and his Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University in 1954 where Einar Hille was a member of the faculty and served as James Howell's doctoral advisor. After teaching at Lehigh University, the University of Georgia, and the University of Delaware, Dr. Howell served on the faculty at the University of Alabama from 1966 until 2002 where he received an appointment as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics.
