Howell (1917-2002) earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and his Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University in 1954 where Einar Hille was a member of the faculty and served as James Howell's doctoral advisor. After teaching at Lehigh University, the University of Georgia, and the University of Delaware, Dr. Howell served on the faculty at the University of Alabama from 1966 until 2002 where he received an appointment as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics.
