Form as Process: Samuel Johnson; epilogue, index. First Edition, 1968. "Classical and Neoclassical literary critics thought of a poem, and in general any work of literature, as mimesis, an imitation of life. In this first comprehensive treatment of the function of mimesis, the author focuses on two crucial points in the tradition: the philosophic beginnings of the idea of autonomous contemplation as revealed in Aristotle's Poetics, and the eventual demise of this idea in the moralism of eighteenth-century England. Within this framework he examines the concept of mimesis in the light of Plato's attitude toward poets, Horace's pragmatic formula or utile dulci, the significant influence of rhetorical theory and its frequent confusion of poetry with rhetoric, pertiinent Christian influences, and the rise of scientism, rationalism, and, by antithesis, sentimentalism. In his analysis of the critical works of a number of eighteenth-century writers -- Dryden, Addison, John Dennis, Thomas Rymer and Jeremy Collier -- who attempted to come to terms with the theory of mimesis, he shows how the pressure of Engligtenment empiricism led to a breakdown of the classical mimetic tradition. Throught the book he discusses the cognitive, structural, and stylistic implications of mimesis, and he also offers provocative observations on the importance of the mimetic principle in any poetic theory, no matter what its historical context." from the jacket flap.
