High quality lettering with no sign of ageing. Clay, Magic and Puzzles are illustrated by Jessie Robinson. Copyright dates range from 1930 to 1947. Front boards on Paper, String, Puzzles have some scratches and minor dents. Description for Puzzles which is typicla of the other books, follows: - Puzzles of every kind for everybody, for fun and mental gymnastics, problems with coins, counters and matches, brain twisters, mathematical and number puzzles, pencil and paper bproblems, cut-out and put-together puzzles, and anagrams and word puzzles. It is very difficult to trace the origin of puzzles, but research has shown tha the great majority of the ones we know teoday are of very ancient lineage. Some were devised by the Greeks and Romans, and a very large number apparently by the monks, scholars and nimble-witted citizenry of the Middle Ages. The surprising thing is that, despite their age, the majority of the world's good puzzles are entirely unknown. The average person of today. Among American readers, there have been books containing short puzzle sections and a few specialized volumes for the puzzle experts. It is hoped that the present book, which aims to give the reader a broad selection of all the major typoes of popular puzzles, both old and new, will help to fill the need that exists for a good general puzzle book -- one with which anyone, old or young, can sit down and have a good time. This description of the Puzzles book is typical and descriptions for the other books are likelly very similar with a little history thrown in.
